A guest post costs between $112 and $461 on average in 2026, depending on whose data you use and how you buy. Completed sales on one marketplace averaged $164 with a $112 median (PressWhizz, 2026), while listed prices average $295 direct and $461 through a vendor (BuzzStream, 2026). Your guest post cost depends on the site's DR, organic traffic, niche, country, and who sits between you and the publisher.

Those numbers look contradictory, but they measure different things. This guide puts the four largest 2026 datasets side by side, shows what moves the price, and gives you a checklist for judging any quote.

I run manual outreach to publishers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, so I see both what publishers ask and what buyers end up paying. For example, across one marketplace, website owners list backlinks at $929 on average, while buyers negotiate down to about $207 (Adsy, 2026).

Guest Post Prices at a Glance (2026 Data)

- PressWhizz (July 2026) — What it measured: Completed orders on its marketplace; Sample: 22,703 placements; Guest post price: $164 average, $112 median - Saaslinks (August 2026) — What it measured: Listed retail prices from several marketplaces; Sample: 101,247 priced listings; Guest post price: $140 median - BuzzStream (updated October 2026) — What it measured: Listed prices in a link marketplace database; Sample: 257,267 sites; Guest post price: $295 direct, $461 via vendor - Adsy (February 2026 data) — What it measured: Listed prices in its own inventory; Sample: 52,671 websites; Guest post price: $459 average

The four largest 2026 pricing studies put a typical guest post between $112 (median completed sale) and $461 (average vendor list price). The gap comes from method: some studies count completed orders, others count listed asking prices, and vendor prices carry a markup.

Read the table this way. Medians and completed sales show what most buyers pay for an ordinary placement. Averages and vendor prices show what the market asks, pulled up by a small number of expensive, high authority sites.

What Is the Average Cost of a Guest Post in 2026?

The average cost of a guest post in 2026 is about $295 bought direct and $461 through a vendor, based on BuzzStream's analysis of 257,267 sites. Most buyers pay less than that, because a few premium sites pull the average up. The median completed sale on PressWhizz was $112.

The gap between asking and paying is wide. Adsy found website owners list backlinks at $929 on average, while buyers typically pay $207, about a quarter of the asking price (Adsy, 2026). The gap grows as DR rises.

Prices are rising too. Adsy's average guest post price went from $427 in 2025 to $459 in 2026, a 7.5% increase, with the sharpest jumps on DR 61 to 90 sites (Adsy, 2026).

Three rules follow from this:

- Treat any single average as a starting point, not a fair price.

- Ask whether a quote is a list price or a negotiated price.

- Compare like with like: vendor prices against vendor prices, direct rates against direct rates.

What Drives Guest Post Cost?

Six factors set guest post cost: the site's Domain Rating, its organic traffic, the niche, the audience's country, who writes the article, and who you buy from. DR and traffic matter most. On Adsy's 2026 data, each extra 10 DR points adds about 32% to the price, and a site with 10K monthly visits charges about 21% more than one with 1K.

Guest Post Price by DR

Price climbs at every DR band, and the jump is steepest above DR 60. In BuzzStream's 2026 data, a DR 80+ guest post bought direct costs about 13 times as much as one on a DR 0 to 9 site.

Adsy groups the same pattern into three bands: $332 per link at DR 1 to 30, $555 at DR 31 to 70, and $2,025 at DR 71 and above (Adsy, 2026).

Organic Traffic

Traffic tracks price more reliably than DR. In BuzzStream's data, a site with any real traffic costs roughly double one with almost none, and the price keeps rising from there.

Source: BuzzStream, 2026.

Watch for high DR sites with no readers. Saaslinks found 1 in 5 sites with DR 70+ get fewer than 1,000 organic visits a month, rising to 37% at DR 80+ (Saaslinks, 2026). DR measures a backlink profile, which can be manufactured, so check traffic before you pay for authority.

Niche, Including SaaS and Finance

Commercial niches cost more because one customer is worth more to the buyer. Adsy's most expensive niches in 2026 were beauty ($1,171 per link), fashion ($948) and finance ($816); the cheapest was personal blogs at $341 (Adsy, 2026).

For SaaS guest post cost, the nearest benchmarks are technology at $555 and web development at $797 on Adsy, and Tech and Science at $279 direct or $475 through a vendor on BuzzStream (BuzzStream, 2026).

Completed sales tell a similar story at lower prices. PressWhizz found casino and gambling the most expensive niche at $252, followed by sports at $246 and finance at $221 (PressWhizz, 2026).

Country: USA, UK, Canada and Australia Guest Post Prices

Sites in the core English speaking markets cost about 50% more than the global average, according to Adsy's 2026 inventory data.

Source: Adsy, 2026.

Saaslinks shows a different picture on median listings: US traffic sites list at $130 and UK sites at $144, close to its overall $140 median, because the US has the deepest inventory (Saaslinks, 2026). Adsy reports averages, which premium US and UK publishers pull up. The practical reading: solid mid tier US and UK placements are easy to find, but premium publications sit far above the global average.

Content and Writing Fees

A guest post needs an article, and the price may or may not include it. Some services bundle writing: RhinoRank's $75 to $400 tiers include a 750+ word article, and FatJoe's published list of $72 to $456 includes the writing (RhinoRank, 2026).

Marketplaces often show two rates per site, one for publishing your own article and one for writing plus placement. If you write the post yourself, you pay only the placement fee, so budget the hours instead. On AA Link Media's marketplace, listings show the placement price, and you can supply your own article or request the article to be written for you.

Who You Buy From

Buying through a vendor adds about 56% to the price of a guest post, roughly $166 per post (BuzzStream, 2026). The markup grows on expensive sites: at DR 80+ it reaches 72%, or $1,248 extra.

That markup pays for real work: finding the site, vetting it, pitching the editor, writing, and replacing links that disappear. RhinoRank points out that BuzzStream's direct figure is the lowest vendor price for each site, so true publisher rates can be lower still.

Guest Post vs Link Insertion Cost

- Average listed price (Adsy, 2026) — Guest post: $459; Link insertion: $225 - Average listed price (BuzzStream, 2026) — Guest post: $295 direct, $461 via vendor; Link insertion: $179 - Average completed sale (PressWhizz, 2026) — Guest post: $164; Link insertion: $112 - What you get — Guest post: A new article built around your topic; Link insertion: Your link added to an existing, indexed article - Main strength — Guest post: Control over topic, framing and anchor; Link insertion: Page already has age and may already rank

A link insertion, also called a niche edit, costs about half the price of a guest post. Adsy's 2026 averages are $459 for a guest post and $225 for a link insertion. You pay less because no new article is written, but strong sites rarely sell insertions.

At DR 71 and above, Adsy found insertions 69% to 79% cheaper than guest posts. BuzzStream adds a warning: about 98% of the insertion offers it analyzed came from lower quality sites. If a fast, cheaper placement suits your page, compare options on our link insertion page.

How to Work Out the Total Price of a Guest Post

The total price is the placement fee plus writing, outreach and any markup or platform fee. Compare quotes on that total, not the headline number. A $400 quote that includes the article and a replacement guarantee can cost less than a $250 quote that includes neither.

Use this formula for every quote:

Here is what that looks like with BuzzStream's 2026 numbers. A DR 40 to 49 guest post averages $384 direct and $609 through a vendor. The $225 difference is the vendor's charge for finding the site, negotiating and usually writing; if you can do that work well yourself, buying direct keeps that money in your budget.

Before you compare total guest post cost across sellers, ask each one the same questions:

- Is the article included, and how many words?

- Is the price based on DA or DR, and from which tool?

- What is the site's monthly organic traffic, and where does it come from?

- Will the link be dofollow, sponsored or nofollow?

- How long is the replacement cover if the post is removed?

- Is there a refund if the post never goes live?

Is Buying Guest Posts Worth It, and Is It Safe?

A paid guest post can be worth it when the site is relevant, has real readers, and costs less than the link is worth to you. It also carries risk. Google's spam policies treat paid links that pass ranking credit as link spam, unless the link is marked rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow".

Google's spam policies list paid articles with links that pass ranking credit, and optimized anchor text in guest posts, as examples of link spam. The same page says paid links are fine for advertising when they carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" (how to qualify outbound links).

In practice, much of the market ignores this. BuzzStream notes that few paid placements use rel="sponsored" and calls the risk one to your rankings rather than a legal one (BuzzStream, 2026). The realistic outcomes are that Google ignores the link, which wastes the fee, or acts against sites that buy and sell links at scale.

Quality is the second problem. BuzzStream found only 1.37% of guest post sites met its traffic and authority standards. Most cheap inventory is low traffic, off topic, or both.

There is a reason to buy that has nothing to do with PageRank. An Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands found brand web mentions correlate with AI citation rates at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks (reported by PressWhizz, 2026). A guest post on a relevant site puts your brand name in context where AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity can find it, even when the link is marked sponsored.

Google also published an update to its site reputation policy in August 2026. In short: from 30 August 2026, a manual action under the policy still demotes the affected section for searchers outside the European Economic Area, but inside the EEA the impact does not apply and the section may instead be separated to rank on its own. The practical lesson is unchanged: keep paid placements on relevant sites with real readers.

The safest paid placement is on a site in your topic, with steady organic traffic, using a natural anchor such as your brand name or page title.

Red Flags in a Guest Post Quote

Walk away when the price is far below the site's tier, the traffic does not match the DR, or the site publishes on every topic. These patterns point to link farms, private blog networks (PBNs) or inflated metrics.

- A DR 70+ site priced like a small blog. Saaslinks found cheap high DR listings are disproportionately sites with almost no traffic.

- Very low prices for "authority" sites. Saaslinks says placements under about $50 are almost always PBN or link farm inventory.

- Traffic that does not fit the DR, or a sudden spike from one country with no content reason behind it.

- Every topic at once. Casinos, crypto, health and home decor on one site is a link farm pattern, as Rankifyer also notes.

- Upsells to remove nofollow. A site selling followed links openly is a site Google can easily spot.

- No live URL report, no replacement term, no refund policy.

How to Set a Guest Post Budget

Set your budget from the sites you need, not from a market average. Find the DR and traffic band your competitors' links come from, take the matching price from the tables above, and multiply by the number of links you need each month.

- Pull your competitors' referring domains in Ahrefs or Semrush and note the DR and traffic of the sites that link to them.

- Match those bands to the DR and traffic tables to get a price per link.

- Choose a route: direct, marketplace, vendor or agency.

- Multiply by your monthly volume. At Saaslinks' 2026 median of $140, three links a month cost about $420, five about $700 and ten about $1,400 before any markup (Saaslinks, 2026).

- Review the placements every quarter and drop sites that send no referral traffic.

For top tier editorial links, BuzzStream suggests being willing to spend at least $1,500 per link in 2026, since these usually come from digital PR or agency outreach rather than marketplaces (BuzzStream, 2026). Frequently Asked Questions

Is guest posting free or paid?

Both exist, but free placements on good sites are now rare. Adsy notes most sites charge an editorial fee, and even free placements cost time for outreach and writing. The editor can still reject the article or remove the link, so free is not the same as guaranteed.

How much more do vendors charge than buying direct?

About 56% more on average. BuzzStream's 2026 data shows $461 through a vendor against $295 direct, roughly $166 extra per post. The markup runs from 48% at DR 0 to 9 up to 72% at DR 80+, and it usually covers outreach, vetting, writing and replacement cover.

Is a sponsored post price different from a guest post price?

Not by much. A sponsored post is a paid article on a publisher's site, and most paid guest posts are sponsored posts in Google's terms. The real difference is disclosure: a sponsored post is labeled, and its paid links should carry rel="sponsored", which Google's spam policies allow.

Does a higher DR always mean a better guest post?

No. DR measures the strength of a backlink profile, which can be manufactured. Saaslinks found 37% of DR 80+ sites selling links get fewer than 1,000 organic visits a month. A relevant DR 40 site with steady traffic is usually a better buy than a DR 80 site that nobody reads.

How much does a guest post cost by niche?

Niche changes guest post cost sharply. On Adsy's 2026 data, personal blogs average $341 per link, technology $555, finance $816 and beauty $1,171. On completed sales at PressWhizz, casino and gambling topped the list at $252 and finance averaged $221.

How much should I budget per month for guest posts?

At the 2026 median listing price of $140 (Saaslinks), three links a month cost about $420 and ten about $1,400 before markup. Agency retainers run $2,500 to $10,000 a month, and BuzzStream puts the typical tier at $2,500 to $5,000 for roughly 4 to 10 links.
